A book I was really looking forward to reading and ended up a little disappointed. The book is definitely written by Bethan Hamilton who was young when the event happened, so it is normal for the book itself to be written to a younger crowd. However, I felt it was too simply written. It was written with the feel of a journal rather than a book of events with feelings. The focus was not on the story, but on how she felt and dealt with things. Again, not a bad things, but I went into it with a different focus.

I also didn't think Bethany really covered the accident itself. Again, knowing that people who are involved in a traumatic accident do not remember the accident probably makes it hard to write about it, but it would have been nice to have other people add information about the accident or somehow add to the actual event. The shark attack is what happened to her, shouldn't that be the main plot?

Okay maybe I am just being difficult or over thinking the book, but I was disappointed. I also didn't care for the movie.

Please someone tell me they liked this book. Obviously it wasn't that bad, as I read the whole thing and then proceeded to rent the movie. I am sure I am looking at it all wrong. It is getting over 4 stars on GoodReads!!!

Summary -
They say Bethany Hamilton has saltwater in her veins. How else could one explain the passion that drives her to surf? How else could one explain that nothing—not even the loss of her arm—could come between her and the waves? That Halloween morning in Kauai, Hawaii, Bethany responded to the shark’s stealth attack with the calm of a girl with God on her side. Pushing pain and panic aside, she began to paddle with one arm, focusing on a single thought: “Get to the beach....” And when the first thing Bethany wanted to know after surgery was “When can I surf again?” it became clear that her spirit and determination were part of a greater story—a tale of courage and faith that this soft-spoken girl would come to share with the world.

Soul Surfer is a moving account of Bethany’s life as a young surfer, her recovery after the attack, the adjustments she’s made to her unique surfing style, her unprecedented bid for a top showing in the World Surfing Championships, and, most fundamentally, her belief in God. It is a story of girl power and spiritual grit that shows the body is no more essential to surfing—perhaps even less so—than the soul.
